Lecture on UNPO at the University of Groningen

June 22, 2001

CLIO, the acronym for the Union of Students of International
Relations at the University of Groningen in The Netherlands, invited Mr Erkin
Alptekin to brief them on the UNPO’s founding principles, its membership, human
rights issues concerning members, and UNPO programmes. The presentation took
place on 21 June 2001, and was attended by at least 60 students of international
relations, international law and history.
Mr Alptekin briefed the students on the current human rights situations of certain
UNPO members, including the experiences of the Tibetan and Uighur peoples. Aspects
such as their strive for self-determination as well as the extent of human rights
abuses there, were discussed, followed by an opportunity for questions from
the audience. Mr Alptekin also had dinner with the student body leadership.
