SPEAK OUT! Estonia

Young Leaders Training Project

19 November 2012, Brussels – Following the success of previous UNPO SpeakOut! editions, the Young Leaders Training Project travels to Estonia, a country with a unique history and expertise from civil society, academia, and government in the issues of identity politics, self-determination, and in particular the power of nonviolence as a form of inclusive, positive and peaceful, political activism.

Building on the UNPO’s twenty years of experience within the human rights mechanisms of the United Nations and its advocacy at institutions such as the European Parliament, SpeakOut! Estonia gathered young activists, policy makers and academics from 23-27 November 2012 in Tallinn and Tartu, Estonia to discuss key issues affecting minority rights, democratic participation and engagement with political processes.

Leading these discussions were Sven Grünberg, Marino Busdachin, Andres Herkel MP, Mart Nutt MP, Andrus Mölder, Mart Rannut, Tenzin Seldon, Chipamong Chowdhury, Märt Läänemets, Kristina Reinsalu, Lauri Mälksoo, Kristiina Ojuland MEP and others.

SpeakOut! Estonia aimed at sharing expertise and experience between participants, and encouraging networking between trainees and experts. Estonian young leaders were given the opportunity to interact with Deputies and key figures in the Estonian administration, young leaders from different geographical areas and backgrounds, and local experts in order to explore and project the rights of people, value of nonviolence, promote democracy and deepen understanding of contemporary self-determination in the context of today’s interdependent world.

Organised by the Institute of the Rights of Peoples (IRP) in collaboration with the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), the training project took place in Tallinn and Tartu, Estonia from 23 – 27 November 2012.
